A Bit Of History

The North American Fuzzy Information Processing Society was the first professional organization founded for the advancement of fuzzy logic and fuzzy set theory. The first NAFIPS meeting took place in Logan, Utah on May 18-20, 1982.

NAFIPS was incorporated as a Nonprofit Public Benefit Corporation by the State of California on February 20, 1985. The founding Board of Directors consisted of Jim Bezdek, Enrique Ruspini, Piero Bonissone, Richard Tong, Lotfi Zadeh, K. S. Fu, and Ron Yager.

The purpose of NAFIPS, as indicated in the incorporation document, is "the promotion of the scientific study of, the development of an educational institution for the instruction in, and the dissemination of educational materials in the public interest including, but not limited to, theories and applications of fuzzy sets through publications, lectures, scientific meetings, or otherwise."
